Reviews are often the first thing people read when choosing a dental clinic—and one of the easiest forms of reputation to manufacture. Most people look at the star rating, the total number of reviews and the first few comments. Purchased reviews are created to perform well under exactly that kind of quick inspection.
The good news is that purchased reviews tend to leave patterns that genuine patients do not. We examined the complete review histories of several dozen dental clinics in Phuket: thousands of reviews sorted by date, with reviewer profiles checked individually. We do not name any clinic here. The purpose is to show you the patterns, so you can check any clinic on your phone in about five minutes.
1. Open the reviewer’s profile—not just the review
Tap the reviewer’s name. A genuine patient usually has a visible history: a café, a hotel, a pharmacy and a few places near home, spread over months or years. Purchased reviews commonly come from one of two types of account: an account that has posted only one review, or an account that gives five stars to unrelated businesses in different provinces within a very short period.
One such account proves little. Twenty in succession establish a pattern. In the most striking example in our review, 86 out of every 100 reviews came from accounts with no other review history. At clinics with an ordinary patient base, the figure was three to five out of 100.
Also check the reviewer’s contribution count and the “Local Guide” label. Travellers who regularly review the places they visit tend to have both, making their wider activity easier to assess.
2. Sort by newest and look at the timing
Google may show the “most relevant” reviews first. Change the order to “newest” and scan several months of activity.
Genuine reviews normally arrive gradually—a few each week, with natural gaps around holidays and quieter months. Purchased reviews tend to arrive in batches: dozens within a few days, followed by a quiet period and then another sudden batch.
One clinic in our review received 231 reviews in a single month, including 137 in one week. At another clinic, three-quarters of all reviews ever posted appeared within one month. A newly created listing that already has hundreds of reviews deserves the same scrutiny.
3. Pay attention to a perfect 5.0
No clinic satisfies every patient perfectly. A clinic with several hundred genuine reviews will normally include a range of experiences: someone waited too long, someone misunderstood a price or someone had a temporary restoration come loose after travelling home. A listing that remains exactly 5.0 across hundreds of reviews, with no three- or four-star ratings, shows a distribution that genuine patients rarely produce.
Read the lower-rated reviews that do appear. The way a clinic responds to a complaint often tells you more than dozens of nearly identical compliments.
4. Read ten to twenty reviews in a row
Reviews based on a real experience often include concrete details: the treatment received, how options were explained, the number of visits, the time involved or the follow-up after treatment. The writing will naturally vary from person to person.
Purchased reviews are usually interchangeable: “best dentist”, “very professional” and “highly recommended”, repeated in slightly different orders without naming a treatment, date or personal detail. Two reviews with the same wording may be a coincidence. Five indicate a template. Reviews written in languages that do not match the clinic’s usual patient base, or that consistently read like machine translation, are another warning sign.
5. Use photos and owner replies as supporting evidence
Photos uploaded by reviewers—not images from the clinic’s own gallery—are difficult to fabricate convincingly in large numbers. A review showing the actual treatment room, treatment documents or a receipt carries more weight than several generic reviews without evidence.
Owner replies show whether the clinic treats reviews as genuine conversations rather than as a score. Look in particular at how the clinic addresses complaints: a professional reply should be specific, respectful and careful not to disclose confidential patient information.
6. Verify the clinic and the dentist independently
Reviews are opinions; licences are verifiable facts. In Thailand, a licensed clinic should display its 11-digit facility licence number. Ask for the clinic’s Thai registered name or licence number and check the facility through the Department of Health Service Support.
You can also ask for the full name and professional licence number of the dentist who will provide your treatment, then verify the dentist with the Dental Council of Thailand. A reputable clinic should be comfortable sharing these details.
What an ordinary review profile looks like
You do not have to take our word for it. Open our own Google reviews, sort them by newest and check a selection of reviewer profiles. You will see reviews arriving gradually over several years, including natural gaps, from people whose wider activity reflects where they live and travel. You will also find occasional three- and four-star ratings and replies beneath them.
That is what an ordinary patient base looks like, and it is a reasonable standard to apply to any clinic—including ours. Reviews should help you create a shortlist, but they do not replace an examination, a clear treatment plan and a written estimate tailored to your case.
Can a clinic delete a negative Google review?
Not directly. A business can report a review that may breach Google’s policies, and Google decides whether to remove it. A negative review disappearing is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the clinic removed fair criticism.
Is a review written in exchange for a gift or discount trustworthy?
They may come from real patients, but they are not spontaneous. They tend to arrive in clusters and lean positive. Treat a run of reviews that mention the same promotion as marketing rather than as an independent verdict.
Is a clinic rated 4.6 worse than one rated 5.0?
Not by itself. A 4.6 rating across several hundred reviews, with detailed responses to the critical ones, is often a more informative record than a perfect 5.0.
Do the same checks work on Facebook and booking platforms?
Yes, although each platform has different rules. Look for consistent patterns across several sources and confirm important facts directly with the clinic.
How can I check whether a dentist is registered in Thailand?
Ask for the dentist’s full name and professional licence number, then check the register or contact the Dental Council of Thailand. Also confirm that the dentist you checked is the person who will actually provide your treatment.
